Humans are social beings who spend the better part of their lives associating with each other. It is in their nature to form a close relationship with each other whenever they share something in common, be it at the work place or in school. Strong friendship ties exist in all walks of life where different groups of people come together to socialize or otherwise.

This close association of humans brings carries with it subsequent effects on individuals. One would find it very hard to remain in a particular group and resist their influence at the same time. People usually tend to follow their peers code of dressing, language usage, facial and bodily gestures as well as their way of reasoning. Actually, a person’s behavior alludes to the company that he belongs to.

Influence can either be positive or negative. Positive peer influence comes as a result of good company and would be beneficial in that it bends one’s character to the right direction. Whenever a person who is vulgar and arrogant seeks to associate with respectful and good mannered people, he then finds himself changing his ways in order to fit in with them.

Negative peer pressure on the other hand results from bad company. It includes drug abuse, pre-marital or unsafe sex, crime and rebellion among others. The only way to avoid it is to keep off associating with the wrong company. Otherwise, one would have an uphill task trying to prevent their principles from being corrupted by their morally corrupt friends.

Besides maintaining ones own principles, an individual should never compromise his or her principles so as to earn friendship from the wrong company.
