The Key to Success is in Having Goals

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 | comments

Very important to note is that we should not allow our past to affect our future. Goals are in no way connected to our past but related to our destiny. Goals are what we want to achieve in life rather than what we think we can get out of life. Our goals should be "SMART" meaning specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bond. Hold yourself accountable to someone like your spouse, colleague or mentor. This will go a long way to help you not divert from achieving your set goals in life.

Finally fill your mind with positive thoughts; if you think you can succeed, you are right. If you think you cannot, you are also right, it lies in the mind. Hold yourself accountable not forgetting to be responsible in all you set to do. Avoid at all cost to create excuses for not succeeding by maybe blaming your background, circumstances or financial status. For one thing is for sure God has gifted each one of us with talents and abilities to archive our purpose in life. Take advantage with where God has positioned you and affect the world around you positively. Identify what you want in life then lay out an action plan to get there and influence peoples' lives. I believe without doubt it's entirely upon us to utilize what God has granted to us freely. I thank God I attended that presentation to share with you these ideas.

Mothers' Unconditional Love

| comments

From when a mother knows she is expecting a baby, the maternal instinct right away triggers a protective instinct that tries to ensure no harm befalls the baby. Even that weird occurrence, which sometimes is an overwhelming craving for certain foods or non-foods while pregnant, is the body's' way of saying that certain minerals are missing from the system and you need them to ensure the baby gets optimum growth in the womb. My wife and I being first time mother and father are leaving nothing to chance to ensure the best for the unborn baby. My wife will always flinch whenever anyone or thing move very close to her. She is not alone many mother invest a lot to their unborn babies, a true testimony of a mothers' love to her child that is independent to the child's physical appearance. As much as some parents lock up their children because of physical deformities and the stigma societies attach to these abnormalities. But most mothers love their babies unconditionally. This ensures the survival of infants to adulthood, thanks to God for these instincts. Just like the American poet (James Agee) puts it "A mother never realizes that her children are no longer children". Even when they are grown old she believes that they remain her little children.

Listen to this Irish saying "A man loves his sweetheart the most; his wife the best, but his mother the longest"

My friend told me five years ago it's his mothers' instincts that saved him from certain death when he got a bout of pneumonia. He had a piercing pain in his chest, which he would stoically endure even as it looked very serious. One reason he resisting going to hospital was he had emptied his pocket at the beginning of the school term. And he thought the pain would eventually go away. But his mother who is also a grand mother had not retired from parenting arena. She said this was not a laughing matter and that she was not going to the village until my friend saw a doctor. And with that she fished from her large purse Ksh 3,000. To my friends surprise the doctor told him he had pneumonia. Every mother has a sixth sense that's impossible to argue with.

A priest tickled his congregation when he talked of this mothers' unconditional love. He spoke of the obligation to congratulate the new mother, there is really no comeliness in the infant to talk about when she cannot honestly exclaim "What a beautiful boy" then simply says "What a baby."

Let me conclude with this gem "Child bearing myth number 1: Labor ends when the baby is born."

In many instances individuals with great personal drive, find ways of getting recognition and opportunity to show their worth. But once spotted they are considered as a threat and attract skeptics especially from the people they work with. People like these need to find ways to implement their ideas and aspirations tactfully, baring in mind other people's convictions as they introduce their thoughts and ideas.

It's important to involve others in your implementation plans from the word go, rather than playing it alone. In Africa, there is a story about a race between a tortoise and a hare in which the tortoise won the price, not because of speed, but because it took advantage of the hare’s overconfidence and mediocrity, and slowly but surely strategized for the win.

On the day that the competition was announced, the hare and the tortoise met for a press conference and just like a heavy weight champion, the hare used boastful words to praise himself and of course throwing in some scathing, and provocative words against his opponent, who as usual kept his peace. The tortoise being a phlegmatic character, who speaks less, didn’t answer a word.

Days before the event as the hare was exercising, the tortoise was organizing a big gang of tortoises. On the material day, he simply placed them along the route early in the morning, each one a distance from the other. Right from the word ‘GO’, guess who was leading. The hare led very well such that at some point he stopped to chew some carrot. Surprisingly when he looked in front, he saw a tortoise. He rose up, ran quickly, overtook the opponent, and then rested smiling to him. Suddenly, he notices Mr. Tortoise again in front of him about one kilometer. He scratches his head wondering how come he was overtaken twice by such a slow opponent. Anyway, he rose and ran fast, overtaking the opponent with wind gusting sweep. Again and again this process was repeated until finally, he was shocked to see the tortoise cross the finish line before him. Hence, Mr. Tortoise took the day.

Mr. Tortoise didn’t work hard, but he worked smart! This is the secret of entrepreneurship. In a world where business competition is fierce, success in not really dependant on how hard you work (even though diligence is important) but how smart you work.

“Little drops of water, little grains of sand, make a mighty ocean and the pleasant land.” – Julia Carney. Most people get stranded in one place for years trying to figure out how to ‘begin big’. They are preoccupied with big plans that never take off. They are waiting for enough financial boosts, enough man power, enough experience, and enough time, which in essence never really comes. Surprisingly, those you overlooked and aimed at challenging with your big plans overtake you and you wonder, “Where did I go wrong?” Well, guess what, they overtook you while you were standing, waiting for conditions to improve.

In the process of growth of your company/business, take small steps, one at a time, consistently. After being faithful in small steps, you’ll look back and be able to say. “I am still not where I want to be, but I am not where I was before.” Do not wait for enough resources before you take a step, use what you have no matter how small, just work with it smartly.

“Victory is won not in miles, but in inches. Win a little now, hold the ground and later win a lot more.” – Luis L’Mour
Never ever be discouraged when you make small progress. Only be weary of standing still. Successful people are those who do what they can with what they have at hand where they are. Have confidence that if you have done a little thing well, you can do a bigger thing well too! Keep on, slow but sure!

One effective tip of marketing yourself or your product is appreciation. A simple thank you does the magic. However, successful businessmen will tell you, they have many, many more way of expressing or saying thank you, even though it sounds simple. Every human being no matter where they come from, are born with the desire to be recognized, to be honored, and to be appreciated. Whenever you are appreciated, tendency is always that you will go back to the same place, or the same person that appreciated you. Gratitude creates desire in others to give
