Proper Parenting And Becoming A Good Role Model To Your Children

Monday, January 18, 2010 | comments

Most children have lost the respect and the admiration they once had for their parents and they are not entirely to blame for this. Parents have failed in their responsibilities and their role in the upbringing of their children. Like in the case of disciplining their children, they have left this to fate. I am one person who believes that when you spare the rod you spoil the child, but for this to be administered correctly there is need to have parenting skills.

Good parenting involves include not argue or fight with your partner in the full glare of your children. Also do not confront your partner in the presence of children, relatives or any other person. Wait until when you are only the two of you and talk about what is bothering you. This will make the children respect you both.

Regardless of how busy you are; good parenting is making time for your children. Have heart to heart talks with them. Create an atmosphere where your children feel free to consult from you anything that involves their personal life. The internet has get information on good parenting skills so make use of it. Attend your children’s school events instead of sending your driver or house help. Be fully involved in every phase of your children growth. If you have a girl, daddy should take her out on a ‘date’. This makes girls extremely confident even when they become adults and if you are a single mother get a man you truly trust to be a father figure to your kids.

Instead of spending all your free time with the boys having beer, watching football and discussing politics, or with the girlfriends sharing drinks, talking about fashion, be home and help your kids with their homework. Proper parenting is about commitment and focus in the welfare of your spouse and children.

Parents should never give bribes openly in the presence of their young ones or giving them alcohol or cigarettes. If possible keep away from these negative habits and be a good role model to your children. Let them know that these habits are detrimental to their personal life, thus when they grow up they will make good life choices.

Parenting Tips On Modelling The Behaviour Of Our Children

Thursday, December 17, 2009 | comments

As parents, our behavior influences our children more than anyone else. We are a role model for them to follow. Do the things you would want them to do as well. If you want them not to use foul language, keep your language clean. Allow me to say that children have changed little since Joseph's brothers sold him to the Egyptians, and the father's role has changed a little too. Traditionally, fathers were known as the authority figures especially when it came to enforcing discipline.

The father's role is to be there after mom has had the baby; he should try and share any job around and also pay attention to the child's discipline, talk and listen to the child. A father's most important job though is to love the child. It is important for both parents to be involved in enforcing good values in their children.

Parental attention is very important to a child, this means focusing on the positive and correcting any negative behaviour; this way you encourage a child to behave well. In some cases you can actually reward a child for doing a certain good thing, though be careful not to over do it. It should not be like bribing them to behave well. They should understand that rewards come with responsibility.

Try re-directing, where by you explain to the child either verbally or physically the better way to behave. This guides the child and also communicates to them what works for you and others. It works even in small children since they are capable of reading your body language.

Parents should create rules for their family and make the children know the consequences of breaking them. This gives them direction. More importantly, we should be our children's friends. Encourage them to open up to you and talk to you about their fears, what makes them happy and their thoughts. For example instead of shouting them down or spanking them (which will either make them shut down or become rebellious) because they misbehaved, try talking first and find out why they did it. Good luck!

Building A Saving Habit From Childhood

Saturday, July 18, 2009 | comments

To encourage each of us, my parents could then top up the balance needed for the particular item and have a big event of taking us shopping with the hard earned cash where we could buy the item we had been saving for. This made us want to save some more each time we were given money for the chores we carried out or received monetary gifts from my friends or relatives.

Once children are able to write, parents can introduce the concept of a budget to build up to the culture of throwing in money into a piggy bank. To implement this, have a weekly allowance for the children and let them get into the habit of writing down how they intend to spend the money. Also stress that this is the money they will use to buy things like ice-cream, candy and birthday gifts for their friends. If they use up the money too fast or on items that were not in their budget, do not add them any money until they get to learn to live within their budgets. This will help them to understand why they sometimes would ask for something and the parents tell them that there is not enough money for the items they are asking for.

By the time children get to their teenage, education on investment vehicles available in the market such as real estate, equity funds, investment in shares and basics in business management can be introduced. This opens up the minds of children to get ready for adulthood and focus on saving towards achieving major goals that can sustain their lives.
